American Family named as one of the best workplaces for LGBTQ equality for third consecutive year

Summary

American Family Insurance is among three Madison, Wisconsin companies and more than 600 major U.S. businesses earning the CEI’s top score of 100.

For the third consecutive year, American Family Insurance earned a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2018 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking report on corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

American Family Insurance joins the ranks of 609 major U.S. businesses earning the CEI’s top score of 100, up from 517 last year. American Family also scored 100 on the study the previous two years, having been the first Madison-based company to achieve a perfect score.

“We are honored to be recognized as a best place to work for our inclusive culture and our commitment to LGBTQ-friendly policies,” says Jim St. Vincent, chief human resources officer. “We believe inclusion is not only the right thing to do, having employees with diverse backgrounds and interests who reflect the diverse customers we serve is critical to the success of our business.”

There were 15 Wisconsin-based companies named to the list, and 12 earned a perfect score of 100 including American Family. Two other Madison companies got a perfect score this year: Alliant Energy Corp. and CUNA Mutual Group.

“We aren’t stopping now,” says Tyler Whipple, diversity and inclusion director. “We will use the progress we’ve made as a foundation to ensure employees feel empowered to be their true and authentic selves and do their best work here at American Family Insurance.”

The 2018 CEI rated businesses in the report based on LGBTQ-related policies and practices including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs, and public engagement with the LGBTQ community.
