American Family prepares for Hurricane Irma, continues Harvey response

Updated Sept. 12: The American Family group of companies is on the ground responding to customers affected by Hurricane Irma in in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama, while continuing to support customers affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Adjusters and call center staff from the American Family group companies of American Family Insurance, Homesite and The General are working with customers and prepared to handle an increasing number of claims as they are reported.

Homesite has renters and condo insurance customers in Florida, and both homeowners and renters insurance customers in Georgia and South Carolina. The General has auto insurance customers in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. American Family Insurance sells multi-line insurance in Georgia, primarily through its agents and in South Carolina through its online sub-brand American Family Insurance | Connect.

“Although we don’t know what the impact of Hurricane Irma will be, we are ready to help our customers face-to-face when they need us,” said Jack Salzwedel, chairman and CEO of the American Family enterprise.

As the American Family group prepares for Irma, it continues serving customers affected by Hurricane Harvey, where a total of 2,200 claims have been filed for damaged property and autos, primarily in Texas. American Family group agents and employees, like the rest of the country, responded generously to Harvey relief including by donating money and supplies to efforts led by American Family brand ambassador J.J. Watt and to the Red Cross. To date, group, agent and employee donations have surpassed $200,000.

“We realize how difficult the uncertainty of Hurricane Irma is for people,” Salzwedel said. “Regardless of where or when it hits, we will be ready to help our customers immediately.”
