Video: UW Health Carbone Cancer Center Race for Research hero

The UW Health Carbone Cancer Center Race for Research will take place on Saturday, June 3, the first official event of 2023 AmFam Champ week. The 5K run/walk benefits adult and pediatric cancer research. It takes place at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course at University Ridge in Madison.

This video features Makenzee “Mak” Smith and her parents, Holly and Robert. Mak is this year's Race for Research hero.

Mak was diagnosed with Stage 2 lymphoma at age 9 after doctors found a grapefruit-sized tumor in her chest. She immediately started chemotherapy, blood and platelet transfusions and immunotherapy. Now 13 years old, Mak still goes to American Family Children's Hospital for routine scans, but is officially cancer-free.

Watch the video below to see Mak's story. Learn more about the UW Health Carbone Cancer Center Race for Research here.
