Stricker wins AmFam Championship to claim fourth title of season
Tournament host Steve Stricker closed with a 3-under 69, his 55th consecutive round of par or better, to claim a five-stroke win at 18-under 198. Steven Alker and Paul Broadhurst finished tied for second at 13 under.
“Today’s win was very special. I had a couple of opportunities the previous years and didn’t finish the job on Sunday,” said Stricker, who retains his place atop the Charles Schwab Cup player rankings. “It was a difficult day not only with the weather conditions, but just fighting my nerves and the emotions of trying to win a golf tournament, especially here in Madison. But I was determined to get it done.”
Stricker’s five-stroke victory falls one shy of the largest margin of victory this season, which he owns by way of his six-shot win earlier this year at the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.
“This week was not about the golf. It’s all about charity and giving back to our community. We get so much fan support, player support, and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers, over 900 strong. Because of that this one definitely means more than probably any tournament throughout my whole career,” Stricker said.
Stricker’s previous finishes at the AmFam Champ were: 2022 (T11, -9), 2021 (T7, -9), 2019 (T2, -15), 2018 (T3, -13) and 2017 (T3, -12).
Other Wisconsin finishers
Two-time former champion Jerry Kelly finished 7 under (tied for 7th) while Mario Tiziani and Skip Kendall were among four players who tied for 45th at 1 under.
“I’m still not happy where I finished,” said Kelly. “I left probably five putts short dead in the jaws including a second putt out there as well. But I’m just really happy for Steve and his family and for what they have done for this tournament. It’s pretty awesome to have a tournament in your hometown like this and it’s definitely because of Steve.”
Additional tournament notes
Coming off a T5 in his most recent start before this week (KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship), reigning Charles Schwab Cup Champion Steven Alker (T2/-13) collects his sixth top-10 finish of the season in his first AmFam Championship.
Seeking a second consecutive top-10 finish (7th/2022), and third overall (5th/2017) in the AmFam Champ, 36-hole co-leader Paul Broadhurst closed with a 2-over 74 to claim his best finish of the season, previously T5/Regions Tradition.
Following his tournament record 10-under 62 in round one, Justin Leonard closed with a 2-over 74 to finish T4 at 11-under 205, his best PGA TOUR Champions finish.
Defending champion Thongchai Jaidee finished T51 at 1-over 217 in his bid to join Jerry Kelly (2019, 2021) as players to successfully defend the tournament title.
