Protect your home from further damage as more storms roll in
Storms caused damage to many homes, vehicles and businesses in the area on May 18 and May 20, and more severe storms are expected in Wisconsin over the Memorial Day weekend. American Family Insurance’s catastrophe teams are joining local claim office employees as they help customers recover from those storms and help protect them from storms to come.
If your home was impacted by these storm events, there are important steps to take to protect it as the next system rolls through.
You should safely protect your property immediately against further damage and theft. Use plywood, tarps or other materials to cover broken windows and damaged rooftops. Keep the receipts of any materials/services that you purchase to make these repairs so your adjuster can review them and reimburse you for expenses covered by your policy.
Ensure your safety when protecting your property. Many power lines may be downed in the storm and should be reported to your electric provider. You should always assume that downed power lines are energized and dangerous, even if they aren't sparking or humming. The minimum safe distance from a downed power line is 35 feet, and you should never approach, touch, or drive over one.
Customers who have claims from storm damage should immediately contact the company's care center or their agent to start their claim. American Family Insurance customers can do that in a
number of ways:
- Digitally report the claim via the MyAmFam app or in their MyAccount on amfam.com.
o Customers can file property or auto claims in the app from anywhere at any time. The claims will be routed directly to the appropriate area for efficient claim handling.
o Customers will also be able to track their claim’s status in the app and see who is handling their claim, details of the claim and other important information.
- Customers can text the word STORM to 26326 (AMFAM) to be sent a link to file their claim quickly and easily from their smartphones. Message and data rates may apply.
- Call the Claims Customer Care Center
o They can also call our Claims Customer Care Center at 1-800-MYAMFAM (1-800-692-6326). We have trained representatives available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help our customers.
