Inspiring and supporting Nashville kids in need

Summary

Hundreds of American Family Insurance agents partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee recently to package 15,000 bags of snacks and other items for kids experiencing food insecurity this summer.

Always be kind. Your dreams matter. Your dreams are important. Smile, laugh, dream.

At a recent national sales event, American Family Insurance agents gave their time writing inspirational messages like the one above and packaging them with healthy snacks for kids experiencing food insecurity in the Nashville area.

Stuffing snack bags for childrenTogether, they stuffed 15,000 bags with about 23,000 pounds of food. The American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation also donated $15,000 – or $1 per bag – to the Second Harvest Food Group of Middle Tennessee.

‘All it cost us was our time’

Jena Jacobs-Garcia (D-655, Burlington, Kan.) and her husband, Carlos, volunteered to write inspirational messages for each bag at the Central Region volunteer event.

“All it cost us was our time,” says Jena. “We ended up staying longer to finish writing and stuffing messages after we found a bunch of bags that didn’t have any. We didn’t want any kids to get a bag without a note.”

Jena’s experience motivated her to explore ways she can further support nonprofit organizations in her local community, including a cancer support group and food pantry.

Family history

Bobby Van Buren (D-320, Marietta, Ga.) tries to volunteer whenever there’s a company-sponsored community event in his area. He didn’t miss his chance to give back at this gathering in Nashville.

“I grew up in a small town in Kansas,” says Bobby. “My parents were very active in our community, and I try to be, too.”

BBobby VanBurenobby arrived at the volunteer event early and helped set up, then was recruited to direct volunteers and keep operations running smoothly.

“I’ve seen how much donations like this directly help people,” he says. “Large service events, like this one have an even greater impact, and that’s a big motivator for me.”
