American Family’s commitment to sustainability grows

New United Eco-Skies Alliance participation is an example of company’s climate action

American Family's participation in the United Airlines Eco-Skies Alliance program is another way the company is supporting sustainability.

American Family Insurance is among nearly 30 companies participating in the new United Airlines Eco-Skies AllianceSM program, in which United corporate travelers purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). SAF creates much lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional jet fuel.

United unveiled the program in April and announced its second set of participants, including American Family, today.

“Being involved in this program will not only reduce our environmental impact from employee business travel but will also allow American Family to be a part of the solution, by helping build demand for sustainable jet fuel,” said Kari Grasee, vice president of business and workplace services at American Family.

Commitment to carbon neutrality by 2030
The United partnership is one more example of American Family’s commitment to sustainability and climate action.

“It’s our corporate responsibility to take on climate change through both advocacy and direct mitigation strategies,” Grasee said.

To directly reduce and offset our impact on the planet, American Family is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, as announced last year. Among other things, the company will continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to increase on-site renewable energy production and renewable energy purchased and to divert waste from landfills.

American Family has established a roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. See the Sustainability and Climate Action Strategic Plan for more details on how American Family will reach this goal.

Climate change affects our communities
As an insurance organization, American Family, and the customers and communities it serves, are greatly impacted by the effects of climate change. In recent years, extreme climate-related events like hurricanes and wildfires have become more frequent and more severe. It's important that American Family – and the insurance industry as a whole – speak out and act on an issue that has such devastating effects.

American Family will continue taking action in this area through its own business practices, the partnerships and investments made by the American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact in startups that promote climate resiliency, and with community investment in nonprofit and other organizations through the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation.

American Family will also continue its long-time support of research and testing to make homes safer and stronger, prevent injuries, save lives and mitigate damage when catastrophes occur, including through a partnership with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), and as a signatory of the Insurers’ Principles for Climate Change Adaptation with IBHS and industry peers.
