American Family Insurance today announced it has completed the sale of Nashville, Tennessee-based The General, a subsidiary of American Family Insurance, to Sentry Insurance. The initial agreement was announced in September of 2024. Including the value of assumed liabilities and required capital, the total transaction value is $1.7 billion.
“The General has experienced significant growth and expanded its capabilities immensely throughout its time with American Family,” said Bill Westrate, chair and CEO of American Family Insurance. “I want to thank everyone at The General who contributed to this success and who will continue on the next phase of its journey. We wish you continued success serving the non-standard auto segment.”
American Family Insurance worked with Sentry due to their experience in the non-standard auto segment and common mutual holding company structure. This transaction allows American Family to place greater focus on its go-forward strategy.
