Company also recognized for philanthropy, ESG efforts

For the second consecutive year, American Family Insurance has been named a Top 50 company for diversity by DiversityInc, ranking 39. This is a nine-point improvement from last year.

For the first time, American Family was also recognized on DiversityInc specialty lists, receiving recognition as a top company on two lists – Philanthropy and ESG (environmental, social and governance).

The DiversityInc Top 50 list, issued annually since 2001, recognizes the nation’s top companies for diversity and inclusion. These companies excel in such areas as hiring, developing, promoting and retaining a diverse workforce. In 2019 and 2020, American Family was on the organization’s Noteworthy list.

“We’re thrilled to receive recognition again for our deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across our organization,” said CEO Bill Westrate. “We know diverse teams and perspectives are good for business and give us a competitive advantage. This is why we’ve doubled down our efforts in recent years, including establishing defined DEI goals as part of our corporate strategy.”

Evaluation of companies on the list included  the following areas:

  • Human capital diversity metrics
  • Talent programs
  • Supplier diversity
  • Philanthropy

“We want to be an employer of choice for diverse talent,” Westrate said. “Earning this recognition for a second year inspires us to keep exploring new and innovative ways to improve in this area – and become a fixture on the DiversityInc Top 50 list for years to come.”

For the fifth year in a row, American Family Insurance is among the 500 companies on the Forbes Best Employers for Diversity list. For this list, Forbes ranked firms or institutions with 1,000 or more employees based on anonymous survey results from employees about numerous facets of diversity at their companies. In 2022, American Family ranked 148, compared with 220 in 2021.

Other factors, such as the number of women on a company’s board of directors, the existence of a designated leader responsible for diversity programs and having communications about diversity and corporate social responsibility also impacted the ranking.

In 2022, American Family was also recognized for the seventh consecutive year as a best place to work for LGBTQ equality and received four out of five stars in the VETS Employer Indexes Awards. In addition, incoming CEO Bill Westrate signed the CEO Diversity and Action pledge, reaffirming the company’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
