American Family named Wisconsin LGBT Chamber corporate partner of the year

Summary

The Wisconsin LGBT Chamber has named American Family Insurance its corporate partner of the year for 2020.

American Family Insurance has been recognized as the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber’s corporate partner of the year for 2020. The award is given to a corporate member of the chamber that’s shown a strong commitment to diversity in the workplace and to positively growing the LGBTQ and allied business community.

"We're honored to present American Family Insurance with our 2020 Corporate Partner of the Year award,” said Jason Rae, President and CEO of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce. “American Family is committed to inclusive excellence and has led the way in Wisconsin when it comes to supporting diverse businesses and communities. We are so proud to have American Family as a chamber member."

American Family has been a member of the chamber since 2016 and its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion – including for LGBTQ people – is unwavering.

“We have long been committed to diversity and inclusion and support of our LGBTQ employees and agency owners is part of this,” said Yasir Kamal, who was recently appointed vice president of inclusive excellence at American Family Insurance. “We believe this commitment helps us all do our best work to deliver superior products and services to our customers.”

Strong commitment to LGBTQ employees and community
American Family’s commitment to LGBTQ employees and the community is longstanding.

In January, the company was named a best place to work for LGBTQ people for the fifth year in a row by the Human Rights Campaign.

Specifically, American Family received a perfect score of 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2020 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking report on LGBTQ workplace equality. The 2020 CEI rated businesses based on policies and practices including non-discrimination workplace protections, parity in spousal and partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, and public engagement with the LGBTQ community.

In 2019, the company began flying the LGBTQ Pride flag at its corporate headquarters in Madison year-round, rather than just in June, internationally recognized at LGBTQ Pride Month.

The company’s support for the LGBTQ community goes beyond its walls. American Family has also provided philanthropic support to several organizations that provide services for the LGBTQ community including OutReach LGBT Community Center in Madison and Courage MKE, which provides housing, resources, and other services for displaced and homeless LGBTQ youth in Milwaukee.

American Family’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity also includes sponsorship of several Business Resource Groups including Abilities, LGBTQA, Multicultural, Southeast/East Asian, South Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Veterans and Military, and Women’s. These employee-led associations are designed to further personal and professional development, promote diversity within the company, add value and impact to the business, and strengthen our local communities.
