The American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation Inc., (AFIDF) will begin accepting proposals for community investment grants on April 4 as part of the foundation’s new application and award process.

“The foundation’s work builds on the strong commitment and support for the communities American Family has served for nearly 90 years,” says Judd Schemmel, community investment director. “With the new foundation, American Family’s community giving has evolved into community investing – aligning our corporate goals with community investments and creating alliances with non-profits for mutual benefit,” says Schemmel.

Foundation priorities

The foundation will support communities in American Family’s 19 operating states by focusing on three areas that align with the company’s mission to inspire, protect and restore dreams: protection (immediate needs); restoration (recovery and making families/communities whole); and inspiration (life-long learning, removal of barriers and overcoming obstacles, reaching full potential).

By issuing purposeful and meaningful grants, the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation will support families by helping fill their unmet needs and address achievement and attainment gaps in our communities.

“We look at our focus as a way to level the playing field by building concrete relationships with non-profit organizations to help them in the near term, which will help us better identify future needs,” says Schemmel.

The foundation’s first grant was announced January 19, 2016, pledging $1 million over five years to the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County to support the AVID/TOPS program. The program works to close the achievement gap among low-income and minority students by providing tutoring, mentors, summer internships and scholarships.
