- About half of those with life insurance are underinsured.
A life insurance policy can provide some financial protection to guarantee that those closest to you are taken care of after a loss.
American Family Life Insurance Company (AFLIC) provides help
September is Life Insurance Awarness Month, and as in years past, AFLIC is providing the Life Lessons American Family Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship, sponsored by Life Happens but voted on by Life Company leadership, is a scholarship that helps student who struggle to pay for college after losing a parent who had little to no life insurance. The scholarship will be used toward future tuition and qualified expenses, which helps minimize the student debt that may have been incurred without the scholarship.
This year’s scholarship winner is Briana, a college junior. She remembers her sister’s death like it was yesterday. A year after her sister died, her mother passed away during surgery.
As Briana adjusted to living with her father, his health deteriorated. He passed away shortly after brain surgery.
Her family's deaths had a significant impact on Briana’s plans, creating a roadblock in her path to one of her goals – receiving a college education.
Now, Briana hopes to become a child life specialist, who help children and their families navigate challenges of hospitalization, illnesses and disabilities.
“All this loss and heartache made me a stronger person,” she said. “I’m doing this for them – I want to make my parents proud.”
