Life Lessons Scholarship Program winner overcomes the odds

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month

Summary

In 2018, American Family Life Insurance Company (AFLIC) donated $10,000 to the Life Lessons Scholarship Program for the second year in a row. The scholarship recognizes the perseverance that so many young people show when they lose a parent. Josh, the 2018 winner, has overcome homelessness, constant relocation and the death of his mother to achieve his dream of going to college.

Josh didn’t have an easy childhood, and it got even tougher when he lost his mom at 14.

“Losing my mom was by far the greatest thing I’ve had to overcome,” says Josh. “My mother was always there for me. She kept me motivated, even in the harshest times.”

But “overcoming” has been a theme for Josh, now a freshman at a university, majoring in business management and fitness and wellness. Now, he’s focused on the future.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. Josh was the winner of the 2018 Life Lessons Scholarship. AFLIC donated $10,000 to the scholarship program, which helps young people seeking a college education and struggling financially because their parent or guardian died with little or no life insurance.

Watch the video below to hear from Josh and find out how the scholarship is helping him reach his goal.

AFLIC will again be donating up to $10,000 to the Life Lessons Scholarship Program to be awarded in September 2019.
