Dreams Foundation announces first round of 2018 grant recipients
American Family Insurance's Dream Foundation is granting awards to 79 organizations totaling $865,000. The grant application portal is now open until July 31 - accepting new Letter of Intent (LOI) submissions from non-profit organizations.
American Family Insurance and its Dreams Foundation continue to have a significant impact in communities across the nation with the latest grant investments to 79 organizations totaling $865,000. (See the entire list below.)
“Each nonprofit we are granting awards to is doing remarkable work improving the quality of life for individuals and families with a focus on life-long learning or filling a gap for basic needs including food, housing and transportation,” says Judd Schemmel, American Family Insurance Community Investment Director.
Areas of priority include an emphasis on programs and services that support under represented and economically disadvantaged individuals and families.
Since 2016, the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation and American Family Insurance have committed $14,000,000 to approximately 3,000 organizations across our operating territory.
One of those organizations receiving a Dreams Foundation investment grant is Madison365. It’s a nonprofit that uses journalism to help create leaders among people of color in the greater Madison area.
“This program has been so helpful for so many young journalists already,” says Henry Sanders Madison365 CEO.
“Through its support, American Family is creating a more diverse local media to literally transform the community. The company creates opportunities for people who might not get a chance otherwise. Its support has been critical to this important work and we can’t thank them enough,” Sanders says.
Fatoumata Ceesay is one of those individuals getting experience through Madison 365.
Fatoumata came from the Bronx, New York to the University of Wisconsin curious and ready to pursue journalism. At the end of her freshman year, she landed an internship at Madison365 covering a variety of topics, including the misconceptions of Muslims. After her internship, she was accepted into UW’s highly competitive Journalism program.
“Our goal is to empower our communities to be better, more inclusive and strong places for all,” says Schemmel.
