American Family treasury team donates $70,000 through grant program offered by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago (FHLBC)

Summary

The FHLBC created the grant program for members, including American Family, to designate COVID-19 related relief for community organizations.

The American Family Insurance treasury team recently supported several community organizations by donating $70,000 in grant funds provided by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago (FHLBC). The grant program was open to members of the bank.

The American Family Insurance treasury team applied for the grants, which were funded to help address the COVID-19 crisis and racial equity gaps in communities, when it was announced in 2020.

The treasury department has strong relationships with several banks, including the FHLBC. The company has been a member of FHLBC since 2009 and has used the bank for funding strategic needs and company operations.

The FHLBC’s Targeted Impact Fund and Relief Grants provide members with aid to support relief efforts for populations impacted by COVID-19 and promote equity and opportunity within communities of color.

The team partnered with American Family’s community investments team to identify 14 community partner organizations to receive more than $70,000 total, with each of them receiving $5,000.

“We value our relationship with FHLBC and the opportunity to work on building strong communities together,” said May Vang, American Family corporate treasurer. “"We felt it was important for our team to be a part of the selection process because these organizations hit close to home and support the local communities where they live and work."

The Relief Grant and Targeted Impact Fund recipients included:

Several of the grant recipients were delighted with the news in surprise virtual presentations coordinated by the treasury and community investment teams.

During the presentations, the organizations also shared how they would use the grants while adjusting their programming to fit COVID-19 regulations.
