American Family seeks summer interns – learn more at live, virtual event
Hear more from intern-turned-employee about her journey as a woman in tech
American Family Insurance will host a free, virtual event on Wednesday, October 26, for college students interested in applying for Summer 2023 internships. The webinar will feature Jennifer Dehler, application development engineer, who will also share her tips for those interested in pursuing a career in technology.
While majoring in computer science at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Dehler gained work experience, networked with other technology professionals and founded a student organization, all of which set her up for success when it came time to apply for internships. She remembered a pivotal moment in her college career, attending a women-in-tech focused Grace Hopper Conference with her classmates.
“It was awesome to go to a conference made for women in STEM and see them come together to talk about what they love to do,” said Dehler. “Our university sponsored a group of women attending the conference. While at the conference I networked with recruiters who told me to make a LinkedIn, and from there a recruiter from American Family reached out to me.”
Dehler went on to accept a role as an information technology intern in the claims area at American Family, where she learned valuable skills. The next summer, she accepted another internship at the company, working as an application development engineer intern. During her internships, she worked as a student ambassador for American Family and competed in the Light the Hoan Intern Challenge along with her fellow interns.
“My advice to incoming interns and young professionals is to be your authentic self, try new things and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone,” said Dehler. “My commitment to these things helped me gain new experiences and bond with my colleagues.”
Dehler will share her experience, tips and tricks for securing a summer internship in a science, technology, engineering and math field during the webinar.
