American Family Insurance partners with VIA CDC to provide futsal courts in Milwaukee neighborhood

The old, cracked tennis court at Milwaukee’s Burnham Park desperately needed repair and upgrades, but there was one problem: nobody in the neighborhood played tennis. They had been left nearly abandoned, becoming an eyesore to the community. After extensive research of the neighborhood, outreach and engagement manager of VIA CDC Kevin Solis found that community members preferred soccer over tennis.

“My job is to work with the community members, I am that ear to the ground,” said Solis. “We are partners with neighbors in ensuring that we implement the vision that they have for their community. This is the best example of that.”

VIA CDC is an organization that helps provide opportunities and improve the livelihood of community members. VIA focuses on cultivating strong communities and envisions a world where all places equip all people to reach their full potential. They have three main pillars: business, community and housing. VIA offers extensive resources around these topics to community members such as financial literacy, voting, grants and more.

American Family Insurance has partnered with VIA CDC to help achieve the community’s dream of having accessible futsal courts – futsal is a modified form of soccer played with fewer players, typically on an indoor or outdoor court. Providing access to outdoor spaces like this ultimately improved community members’ overall health and provide a space for spontaneous or planned social activities.

Funds raised from the American Family Insurance Championship were granted to this project and the American Family Milwaukee team also partnered with VIA CDC to facilitate the project.

American Family is committed to communities and helping close equity gaps through partnerships such as this one.
