American Family Insurance Championship hosts UW Carbone Cancer Center’s Race for Research June 4

Annual fundraiser will be held in person in 2022 to kick off tournament week

The PGA TOUR Champions American Family Insurance Championship will host the annual UW Carbone’s Race for Research in person, after being held virtually in 2021. The race became part of the weeklong series of tournament events in 2019.

The family-friendly 5K run/walk or 1-mile walk supports cancer research at the UW Carbone Cancer Center Race for Research has raised more than $956,000 since its beginning in 2010 and has become a place for community members, patients, survivors, families and staff to join together to fight cancer.

2022 event

This year’s race will take place Saturday, June 4, starting with check-in and registration at 8:30 a.m. at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, located adjacent to the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. Run/walk events start at 10 a.m.Pokrass

“The American Family Insurance Championship is pleased to once again host UW Carbone’s Race for Research, especially back in person in 2022,” said Nate Pokrass, tournament director. “This event is a fun way for fans to kick off tournament week, all while supporting a great cause, and allows the tournament to have an even greater charitable impact on our community.”

“We are excited to host this event in person again with the American Family Insurance Championship,” said Dr. Howard Bailey, Andy & Susan North professor of cancer research, and director, UW Carbone Cancer Center. “We were able to raise $65,000 in 2021 through our two-week virtual challenge. This year, we are excited to gather in person to raise cancer awareness and cancer research funds for hundreds of cancer researchers at UW Carbone.”

Everyone who registers receives a fundraising page online to share with family and friends. A unique aspect of this race is that participants can fundraise for a specific cancer research fund of their choice.

Fees range from $15-$35 per participant, depending on several factors, such as registration date, age, and if running or walking. Children 0-5 are invited to participate for free. Participants who raise $100 or more on their personal fundraising pages will receive a special t-shirt.

Additionally, all participants will receive two complimentary one-day admission tickets to the American Family Insurance Championship, with tournament play June 10-12 at University Ridge Golf Course.

About the American Family Insurance Championship
American Family Insurance, the PGA TOUR Champions and Wisconsin native Steve Stricker launched this professional golf tournament in June 2016. The American Family Insurance Championship, held annually at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis., features a 78-player field. Past champions include Jerry Kelly (2019 and 2021), Scott McCarron (2018), Fred Couples (2017) and Kirk Triplett (2016). (The 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID-19.)
