Soak up the sun: Eden Prairie saves with solar power
The use of solar energy is becoming more popular each year. Here is one example of American Family incorporating this sustainable technology.
In the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, home to American Family's Eden Prairie, Minnesota office, the average solar power system consists of 96 panels and generates 20-40 kilowatts per year. In comparison, American Family's Eden Prairie office roof is made up of 438 panels and generates 180 kilowatts. Our panels—which were installed in May 2016—are nearly five times larger than the area average.
The solar panels—which are projected to have a service life of 30-35 years — cover the entire roof of building three. “This project was really a no-brainer,” says Eden Prairie Facilities and Support Manager Jim Williams. “Not only will the panels save approximately $28,400 each year, but they’ll also greatly reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”
What’s next?
American Family is doubling down on our commitment to environmental sustainability by establishing new energy goals, including having our buildings rely on a larger percentage of alternative electricity over time, with an extra emphasis on generating electricity on site when it makes financial and environmental sense to do so.
