American Family Insurance awarded citation of commendation for solar energy efforts

Summary

American Family is honored by a Wisconsin state lawmaker for it's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Wisconsin State Rep. Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) presented American Family Insurance with a citation for its commitment to environmental stewardship specifically related to the significant solar panel installation at American Family’s headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. It’s currently the largest solar panel rooftop installation in Wisconsin.

“We are honored and humbled to be recognized for our solar panel installation, and it inspires us to do more,” said Dan Rosetta, American Family Insurance facilities operations director. “We installed the solar panels because American Family Insurance has made a commitment to sustainability to protect our environment and contribute to the well-being of our communities.”

The citation from Rep. Sargent honors American Family Insurance for leading the community and the state of Wisconsin with its commitment to sustainability, conservation and renewable energy.

“It’s no small feat to have the largest solar array in the state of Wisconsin,” said Rep. Sargent. “I wanted to recognize American Family Insurance for this work and all the efforts they are making to invest in our community.”

Nearly 4,500 solar panels are installed on the roof of a utility building at its National Headquarters (NHQ) in Madison.

This installation is estimated to produce approximately 1.26 million kilowatt hours annually, which is enough energy to power 122 average-sized homes, or 874,000 60-watt light bulbs for one day. The panels have a service life of 30 years and no moving parts to wear out or replace, requiring little maintenance. The system is projected to offset six to nine percent of the building’s electrical usage, saving approximately $191,000 in annual energy costs.

In addition, the solar installation is expected to offset approximately 1.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas annually and 51 million pounds of CO2 over the course of its 30-year service life. This is equal to the yearly emissions of roughly 213 automobiles.

The solar panel installation is just the latest in a number of sustainability projects American Family Insurance has implemented in its dedication to environmental stewardship and corporate responsibility. The company seeks a zero waste future, one that reduces its environmental footprint, integrates sustainable principles and practices, services and communities across its operating territory.
